Ice Cream Sandwich and Galaxy Nexus finally unveiled

Google Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich LogoWith the recent passing of Apple founder and former CEO, Steve Jobs, Samsung and Google respectfully postponed their planned launch for the much rumoured Galaxy Nexus handset, and of course, the much-anticipated Ice Cream Sandwich update to its Android operating system. But last week finally saw the Korean electronics manufacturer and online search giant lift the lid on their latest updates.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus:

Samsung Galaxy NexusFollowing on from its previous Google phone, the Korean manufacturer continues to set mobile smartphone standards with the latest addition to the Nexus lineup. Carrying over the concave curved screen from its predecessor, the Galaxy Nexus suitably makes a unique mark for itself with the appearance of no contextual buttons being place on the device, taking a leaf out of the doomed Nokia N9 handset design philosophy. Instead, any buttons relevant to the operating system are shown within the stunning 1280×720 pixel Super-AMOLED high-definition display. Its internal processing power also packs a punch with the inclusion of a dual core Cortex A9 processor and 1GB of RAM.

Expected to retail for the princely sum of £549.99, the Nexus Prime will also be available with a bundled contract on Three, Vodafone and O2. Though British buyers will only have the 16GB variant available to them.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

Ice Cream Sandwich HomescreenWith the Android platform in a constant state of evolution, Ice Cream Sandwich can easily be seen as the biggest update since the introduction of 2.1 Éclair in 2009. Converging the tablet and handset versions of the mobile operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich is quite a departure from the usual user interface we’ve gotten used to over the years.

Ice Cream Sandwich also brings some unique features to the Android platform. During the launch event on the 19th, Google demonstrated the latest feature it believes will help keep smartphones secure: face recognition to unlock. It also previewed a revamped address book application, aptly named ‘People’. Google also teased that Ice Cream Sandwich could theoretically be back-ported to some older devices. Something its growing homebrew fan base was more than pleased to hear.

Ice Cream Sandwich can be truly seen as the update android users have been waiting for, as it finally shakes off the hacker image it has long had and can truly rival features touted from its main rival, Apple’s iPhone and iOS. Hopefully some, if not all manufacturers currently releasing Android devices will offer their users the chance to update their phones to Android 4.0. Best Mobile Phones Pro will be bringing you the latest Ice Cream Sandwich as and when it comes.
